Teaching
My primary objective as a counselor educator is to work in concert with my fellow educators to empower and train students to rely on their unique skills, experiences, and abilities as they build their unique counseling identity. To accomplish this objective, I create course-specific lectures that are based on the current CACREP Standards as well as my own experiences as a counselor and counselor educator. An example of a mini-lecture that addresses counseling ethics and self-care can be found below. Upon concluding lecture, I utilize experiential activities that empower students to think through the topic for themselves. After concluding the activity, I encourage students to share their experiences with their colleagues. This mutual exchange not only enhances peer-to-peer collaboration but also promotes deep learning. This process is informed by Kolb’s theory of Experiential Learning. Furthermore, I believe that this process encourages students to recognize the ways that their own unique experiences inform their professional identities and allows them to become cognizant of their own biases and values.
